Will Wifi in our National or Provincial Parks Ruin the Outdoor Experience? [Rant]

There was an announcement today that Parks Ontario will be test piloting Wifi in some of the Ontario Parks this summer. Currently the plan is to test it in Pinary Provincial Park then potentially roll it out to some other parks next year based on the reaction from park visitors.
Of course this has some Canadian's all up in arms over the fact that their wilderness experience will be completely ruined with the presence of the internet.

Arctic Scouts Can Earn Their Kayak Builder Badge [Scouting]
I recently stumbled upon a very cool website talking about the history of scouting in Northern Canadian communities.
Did you know that in 1964 the National Council of Scouts Canada authorized a series of special badges specifically for Arctic communities? What’s interesting about them is that they were only available for people who lived in the North.
If you are a Scout in the north you can attain your Kayak Builder badge. To get it you are required to:
- Know how the form of a kayak is made.
- Be able to recognize kayaks made by various groups of people.
- Make a model kayak covered with skin which will be watertight, and make a model paddle for the kayak.
- Know why the shapes of kayaks differ from place to place.
- Explain the various implements used in hunting from a kayak and be able to demonstrate their use.
- Paddle a kayak without accident for three miles.
There were a coup le of other interesting badges available including Fur Trapper, Hunter, Dog Driver and Lamp Maker but my favourite one (which is available for younger cubs is the Germ Enemy. To earn that badge (and make your mother proud) you have to:
- Keep hands, feet, nails and teeth clean and cared for properly.
- Know why regular meals and regular sleep are important and make an effort to observe good habits.
- Know the need for prompt attention to cuts, injuries and skin infections.
- Know the treatment for fleas and lice.
- Perform the Cub exercises and walk with good posture.
- Know why regular exercise is important.

Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium Review [Kayak Nerd Meeting]

Last Sunday I got back from the Great Lakes Sea Kayak Symposium in Grand Maris, Michigan. The event is in its 26th years old but was organized for the first time by Down Wind Sports.
This was the first time that I had been to an American symposium and I got to honest, it really isn’t all that different from those back home. I don’t know what I was expecting but when you get down to it, it’s still groups of people getting out on the water matter what side of the border the event takes place on.
As you know, the kayaking world has some pretty prolific writers and bloggers and for some reason they all seemed to be in attendance at the symposium. It was fun to finally meet all the people I have known online for several years now. Some of the bloggers there included:
Keith Wikle from gokayaknow.com Derek Mayoleth from kayakquixotica.com Freya Hoffmeister form qajaqunderground.com Sharon & Alec Bloyd-Peshkin from Have Kayaks, Will Travel Dave St Anthony from The Lake is the Boss Kelly Blades from, well his own site kellyblades.com Slibs from Slibs says... Greg Maino from juskuz.com
At one point we were trying to organize a kayak blogger meet-up. In the end we ran out of time to make it happen but it might have been for the best because I’m pretty sure that putting all those super kayak nerds (including myself) in one room might have caused a rift in the spacetime continuum.
